Charts in Spreadsheets

You can turn any range of your Quip spreadsheet data into an embedded chart (just like in Quip slides). Simply select the data you're looking to visualize, then click the chart button that's sitting up above the spreadsheet.

  • Choose from pie, line, or bar graphs
  • Customize colors and labels
  • Drag the chart to wherever you please.

Take a look:

The chart stays dynamically connected to the data that it came from, so if you update something in the cells, it'll update on the chart, too.

As an added bonus, you can create a chart in a Quip sheetsheet, copy and paste it over to a Quip slide deck, and it'll stay linked to the spreadsheet data it came from. When you update it in one place, it'll be updated in the other, too. Neat, right?

Note that charts aren't available for spreadsheets within documents. If you want to work on a chart using data that's embedded in a document, move it into its own spreadsheet first.

Editing a chart

Clicking on a chart will bring up some controls on the right side of your window. You can use these to customize how your chart looks, which data it's using, and how that data should be interpreted.

Under the Data tab, you can adjust how the data is treated:

  • Range: Specify which cells you want included in the chart.
  • Switch rows and columns: Set which one should be plotted along which axis.
  • Use first row as headers: This treats column titles as chart labels (and leaves them out of the data itself).
  • Use first column as labels: This treats row titles as chart labels (and leaves them out of the data itself).

Under the Customize tab, you can set the chart type, and change its appearance:

Pie charts

  • Style: You can change the position of the chart legend, or hide it entirely.

Line graphs

  • Style: You can change the position of the chart legend, or hide it entirely.
  • Horizontal Axis: You can give the axis a title, change the number formatting, and toggle the display of grid lines.
  • Vertical Axis: You can give the axis a title, adjust its scale, set the number of tick marks shown, change the number formatting, and toggle the display of grid lines.

Bar graphs

  • Style: You can change the position of the chart legend, or hide it entirely.
  • Horizontal Axis: You can give the axis a title and change the number formatting.
  • Vertical Axis: You can give the axis a title, adjust its scale, set the number of tick marks shown, and change the number formatting.
